Diazepam works on the nerves in the brain such as the Central nervous system. So, this medication works by calming the brain and nerves. Valium with other medication or on its own, is most times used to treat seizures. Valium works by enhancing the effects of a certain natural chemical in the body called GABA.

Common side effects of Valium include:

- ataxia (loss of balance)

What is the dosage for Valium (diazepam)?
- Valium may be taken with or without food or as prescribed by your doctor or pharmacist.
- Valium (diazepam) is disposed of by the liver and excreted mainly by the kidney. Dosages of diazepam can need to be lowered in patients with abnormal kidney function.
- The usual oral dose for anxiety or seizures is 2-10 mg given 2-4 times daily.
- The usual rectal dose of valium is 0.2-0.5 mg/kg and depends on the age of the patient.
Is Valium (diazepam) safe to use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?
- Benzodiazepines, including diazepam, may cause fetal abnormalities and should not be used during pregnancy.
- Diazepam is excreted in breast milk and may affect nursing infants. Therefore, valium should not be used by women who are nursing.
Who can take Valium (diazepam)?
Children of 6 months of age and adults can take this medication but for infants and children up to 6 months is not recommended.
